Is the concept of fractions/decimals important and necessary? Why?
I would love to hear from my students as they ponder the question above. Think about it, write a response, read other responses, respond to each other, etc.

I think that decimals and fractions are important in life because when you grow up and you have a job that has to do with math and you had never learned fractions or decimals then the buisness that you work for will go down if nobody knows that stuff. You will also be not as successful in life. When you need to solve a mixed fractions problem and have to put the mixed fraction in a decimal you won’t know any clue to what decimals or a mixed fraction is because decimals and fractions will be another world of words for you. What do you think about fractions and decimals because I just wrote my respose and want to know what your response might soud like compared to mine. One more thing is that you actually learn fractions and decimals not because most everyone goes to school to learn it but when you learn it it actually most of the time sticks because fractions and decimals go together by mixed fractions so remember these reasons why we learn fractions and don’t forget to learn fractions and decimals or you can’t do everything that you would like to do.

I think the concept of fractions and decimals is important because if someone wants “a slice of pizza” you will not know what he/she means. It is different from saying,”I want a 1/8 slice of pizza.” You’ll get the point.

In response to bp14- Decimals ARE confusing at FIRST. You’ll get the hang of it. Basically decimals are used to show PIECES of WHOLE numbers. Think about how change(pennies, dimes, etc) are pieces of whole dollars. Hang in there and keep asking questions. We are here to help each other.

I think fractions are fun, but at times can be difficult. It’s kind of cool to think of them as cousins. For me, it makes converting fractions into decimals (and vice versa) easier and less confusing.

I think that decimals are hard at first but I think that they are pieces of whole numbers. Think of it this way, dont you think pennies and dimes become dollars?

I think you need to know what fracrtions and decimals are, for example what if you where baking a cake for mother’s day and you DIDN’T know what fractions and decimals were? Don’t you think learning how do it early would help just as much than having to learn one extra thing the next year? Cause how else would you know what 3/7 is!?!!?!?

Fractions and decimals are important in your life because in between whole numbers are decimals or fractions. There are not only whole numbers in your life. Sometimes you may end up with a decimal or a fraction in your life. Suppose some friends come over and you buy 1 pizza, how many pieces do you cut? If you knew fractions and decimals, you could have cut the pizza in to the right number of pieces. So that’s why fractions and decimals are so important in your life.

I think fractions and decimals are important so you know how large to cut a piece of pie,
how large to cut a piece of plywood, or to understand money much better.

ap17, DON’T WORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first time I heard of fractions, I was like what on earth is a 4/5?? why would you even have pieces of numbers?? But later you get it piece by piece by piece. It’s like allowance and your saving up your quarters but soon, you’ll get a whole dollar, even though it might take a long time.

If you say no…then fine. I think it is fair though to ask you why you are saying no.

That’s awesome KK#? It’s important to know how to use a calculator when dealing with fractions.
